The settlement on St. Croix Island did not survive. No one is living there today. Why do you think this is?
Was this a good spot to create a settlement? Why or why not?
Do you think the settlers had enough resources to survive on St. Croix Island? Why or why not? What could they have brought with them from France to help them avoid getting sick? What could they have gotten from First Nations people to help them avoid getting sick?
Based on what you have learned about the settlement on St. Croix Island you must put yourself in the shoes of the explorers in 1604 and write letters trying to convince another explorer where you should settle. In each letter you get to write from the point of view of the explorers. You can be any explorer you want. In the first letter you have to write to another explorer and explain why you want to create the settlement on St. Croix Island. In the second letter you have to write about why you want to create the settlement at Port Royal. Remember you are in 1604 and do not know what happens at the settlement on St. Croix Island, but you do know what resources are and are not on the island.
To get your thinking started create a list of the pros and cons of creating the settlement on St. Croix Island and the pros and cons of creating the settlement at Port Royal.
